For Robert, life has often felt like a struggle - juggling mental health, finances and day-to-day uncertainties that come with trying to get by.
However, after receiving support from the Cash First Flexible Crisis Fund, things have started to change in Robert’s life for the better.
“The Cash First experience has been excellent overall. I've started to feel better about myself again for the first time in a long while.”
Robert currently volunteers at a local food bank in Aberdeen for four days a week and is considering returning to college. He says: “Maybe I’ll study and take on a part-time job. I want to do something meaningful, something I enjoy.”
Robert was introduced to Cash First through trusted partner organisation Instant Neighbour who supported and guided him through the application process. With their help, he successfully received a grant that he could use where he felt he needed it most.
“I mainly prioritised my spending on food and bills,” he explains. “I also had a small, unexplained overdraft which was such a relief to clear off. I didn’t have to stress about it anymore.”
Being able to make independent choices about his spending has empowered Robert to take back control over areas of his life that once felt overwhelming.
“When my mental health gets bad, it’s really bad. That small boost from Cash First has greatly supported me to get out of a small hole that I didn't know I was in. For the first time in a long while, I have some extra cash at the end of the month.”
“It’s taken a few months, but I’m finally there. I’m not just surviving anymore, I’m starting to live and enjoy my life again. The whole experience, from start to finish, has been excellent. I am truly thankful to everyone involved in Cash First for supporting me in getting to a better place.”
